On the sollemnity of Our Lady's assumption into heaven, Fr. Rafael de Ojeda, rector of the church of Our Lady at keizers­gracht, Am­ster­dam, celebrated the 40th anniversary of his priestly ordination. Op het hoog­feest van de Ten­hemel­op­ne­ming van de Maagd maria vierde rector Rafael de Ojeda de 40e ver­jaar­dag van zijn pries­ter­wij­ding.

Rector Rafael de Ojeda is a canon of the ca­the­dral chapter and the peni­tentiary, which means, amongst other things, that he can be approached as a trusted confessor in more difficult cases. But above all, he is rector of the Church of Our Lady, where he runs, amongst other things, valuable courses in English and Dutch to prepare couples for marriage. During his time as rector, more than 1,800 couples have taken part in these courses! Exactly forty years ago on this very day, he was ordained a priest of the Prelature of Opus Dei in Torreciudad. This was celebrated with great enthusiasm in a packed church. Confession was available before and during Mass, and many made use of this opportunity. During Holy Mass, I delivered the homily set out below. The regional vicar of Opus Dei concelebrated, mons. dr. Christian van der Ploeg. Priests from Opus Dei who were atten­ding a course in Zonnnewende (Moergestel) concelebrated as well, as did a number of priests from the city of Am­ster­dam. Some priests of the city were on holiday, whilst others were involved in the Marian procession organised by the Jesuits of the Krijt­berg in Am­ster­dam, which was taking place at the same time. After Holy Mass, there was a convivial gathe­ring in the hall next to the church with refresh­ments. There, Rector Rafael was presented with a framed papal bles­sing from Pope Leo and he had to cut the special jubilee-cake.

At the Church of Our Lady, the Syriac Ortho­dox Church, led by Father Antonios Saliba (see photo), and the Latin Catholic community, led by Rector De Ojeda, work together in close collaboration. There is an English-language Mass on Saturday and Sunday eve­nings, which is very well attended; there is a Latin High Mass; a Mass for the Surinamese community; and, in the chapel, the Italian community celebrates its Holy Eucha­rist. The Italian priest, Don Igor, was also present at the celebration.

Rector Rafael de Ojeda is kanun­nik van het ka­the­draal kapit­tel en peni­tentia­ris, wat onder meer betekent dat hij als ver­trouwde biecht­va­der bena­derd kan wor­den in moei­lijker zaken. Maar bovenal is hij rector van de O.L. Vrouwe­kerk met onder meer waarde­volle curssusen ter voor­be­rei­ding op het huwe­lijk in Engels en Neder­lands. In de jaren dat hij er rector is hebben er al meer dan 1800 bruidsparen aan deel­ge­no­men! Precies op deze dag was hij veer­tig jaar tevoren tot pries­ter gewijd van de prelatuur van het Opus Dei in Torreciudad. Dat is met en­thou­sias­me gevierd in een over­volle kerk. Er was biecht­gele­gen­heid voor en tij­dens de Mis en daar werd druk gebruik van gemaakt. Tijdens de heilige Mis heb ik de onder­staande preek gehou­den. De regio­naal vica­ris van Opus Dei, mgr. dr. Christian van der Ploeg con­ce­le­breerde. Pries­ters van Opus Dei die in Zonnnewende (Moergestel) op cursus waren, con­ce­le­breer­den even­eens, evenals een aantal pries­ters van de stad Am­ster­dam. Som­mi­gen presters van de stad waren op vakantie, anderen waren betrokken bij de Maria-pro­ces­sie van de Jezuïeten van de Krijt­berg in Am­ster­dam die tege­lijker­tijd was. Na de heilige Mis was er een gezel­lige bij­een­komst in de zaal naast de kerk met hapjes en drankjes. Daar kreeg rector Rafael een inge­lijste pau­se­lijke zegen van paus Leo aan­ge­bo­den en hij mocht de speciale jubileum taart aansnij­den.

In de O.L. Vrouwe­kerk zijn de Syrisch-Ortho­doxe kerk met pries­ter Antonios Saliba (zie foto) en de Latijns-katho­lieke gemeen­schap onder lei­ding van rector De Ojeda in goede samen­wer­king actief. Er is een Engelse Mis op zater­dag- en zon­dag­avond, die zeer druk bezocht wordt, er is een Latijnse hoog­mis, een Mis voor de Surinamers en in de kapel heeft de Ita­li­aanse gemeen­schap haar H. Eucha­ris­tie­vie­ring. Ook de Ita­li­aanse pries­ter don Igor was aanwe­zig bij de vie­ring.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VOCATION

ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY: 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PRIESTHOOD OF CANON RAFAEL DE OJEDA RUIZ DE LUNA

Brothers and sisters,
It is a won­derful jubilee that we are able to celebrate today with gratitude: the fortieth anniversary of the priesthood of Father Rafael De Ojeda Ruiz de Luna, canon peni­tentiary of the ca­the­dral chapter. He was ordained a priest on this very day at the Marian shrine of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Torreciudad.

Grateful

We are immensely grateful to God for his priesthood, for it is, first and foremost, a gift from God: everything is grace; we have nothing of our own, and so it is right that we should, first and foremost, look to the Giver of all good things, the merciful Lord, and that we - especially on this solemn feast day - give thanks to the Virgin Mary, who, with her maternal care and love, has guided this priestly life. And we are grateful to Saint Josemaría Escrivá, foun­der of Opus Dei, who inspired Rafael and through whom he found his vocation.

"Fiat"

We are grateful to Father Rafael de Ojeda because - by God’s grace - time and again, in all manner of situations, he spoke his ‘fiat’ with Mary to the Lord who called him and made him a priest. We give thanks to God for this priest’s ‘yes, here I am’, his ‘yes, I will, I am ready’, with which he ac­cep­ted God’s plan for his life and, with God’s help, brought it to fruition.

A won­derful vocation

We thank God for the countless people to whom he has given spiritual guidance, whose confessions he has heard and to whom he has granted God’s forgiveness, whom he has addressed with kindness and understan­ding as a man of God, for whom he celebrated the Holy Eucha­rist and to whom he administered the Body of Christ, or the couples whom he prepared to receive the sacra­ment of Holy Matrimony and whom he united in marriage. What a won­derful vocation the priesthood is - to be Jesus, the Good Shepherd, for people!

In silence

Today our hearts are filled with gratitude for the natural and supernatural gifts which the Lord has bestowed upon Father Rafael de Ojeda. Good deeds usually take place in silence; they do not feature in the media, they make no noise, and so most of the priestly work—and the most important part of it—remains hid­den from the outside world; yet many people will be able to bear witness to how a priest—this priest in particular—was an instru­ment of God’s grace.

The most beautiful vocation

What is the most beautiful vocation? Perhaps the first answer to that question is that the most beautiful vocation is the one God has destined for you. If you realise and experience that your vocation is to marry, then get married! That is the most beautiful and best thing for you. If you realise that God has destined you for a life of celibacy, follow that path! If you realise that God is calling you to become a priest or to dedicate your life to God, follow that path! Do not be afraid. You must never be afraid; you are in God’s hands. Take steps to grow in follo­wing Jesus Christ along that path. In every vocation, you can and must sanctify yourself.

Sacrifices

Of course, every vocation demands sacrifice, and it is therefore essential that we train ourselves in making sacrifices and in steadfastness. And we must adapt our lifestyle to our vocation. Do you feel called to marriage? Then let yourself be guided by love for your hus­band or wife and make the sacrifices so that you do not live for yourself but can be there for one another. Are you called to a life of celibacy? Then interact with others in a way that is appropriate to that calling.

Be consis­tent

Do not be afraid, but be consis­tent: if your calling is to become a priest, align your behaviour, your thoughts and your words with that. It is not that you will never make mistakes or commit sins. We are not angels. But if you are aware of your vocation, then align your life with it and hold fast to the direction you must take to fulfil your vocation. Therein lies our happiness! Our happiness lies in embracing and follo­wing our vocation.

Trust in God's mercy

If you have fallen, there is God’s mercy and His forgiveness, but get up and carry on in the direction that corresponds to your vocation. A double life or a wave­ring course hollows everything out; then your vocation becomes an empty shell. This applies to everyone, whatever your vocation may be. Do you sin? Get up quickly and carry on, but carry on in the direction your vocation points you.

Congratulations!

So today we thank God that, over all these years, we have been able to meet in Father Rafael Ojeda a priest who has led the way for us in this regard. I therefore wholeheartedly congratulate him on this jubilee! And perhaps this day will be an inspiration for some of you to take steps along the path of your possible vocation.
And if that is a calling to the priesthood, be assured that it is a won­derful path, enabling you, as a priest, to make Jesus Christ present amongst us.

The example of the Virgin Mary

Brothers and sisters, we are celebra­ting this priestly jubilee on the day we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, body and soul, into heaven. Mary’s Assumption and her coronation as Queen of Heaven and Earth mark the fulfil­ment of her vocation. The Assumption shows us that in Mary everything has already been fulfilled that we one day hope to attain, and that she no lon­ger stands before us as the little, simple girl from Nazareth, but as the one who is with God on our behalf, the Mother of all people. In her we see what can happen when you allow God to work His will in your life. He, and He alone, can truly do great things for us.
May her intercession guide you on your journey ahead, dear jubilarian, dear Father Rafael de Ojeda, in the service of Jesus Christ and His Church.

Broe­ders en zusters,
Het is een prach­tig jubileum dat we vandaag in dank­baar­heid mogen vieren: veer­tig jaar pries­ter­schap van Father Rafael De Ojeda Ruiz de Luna, kanun­nik peni­tentia­ris van het ka­the­draal kapit­tel. Hij is op deze dag tot pries­ter gewijd in het Maria-hei­lig­dom van Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Torreciudad.

Dank aan de Gever!

We zijn God bovenmate dank­baar voor zijn pries­ter­schap, want dat is aller­eerst een gave van God: alles is genade, we hebben niets uit ons­zelf en het is dus goed dat we op de aller­eerste plaats de Gever zien van alle goeds, de barm­har­tige Heer en dat we - zeker op dit hoog­feest - de Maagd Maria danken die met haar moe­der­lijke zorg en liefde dit pries­ter­le­ven heeft begeleid. En we zijn de heilige Jozefmaria Escrivà erkente­lijk die Rafael heeft geïn­spi­reerd en door wie hij zijn roe­ping heeft gevon­den.

Fiat

We zijn Father Rafael de Ojeda dank­baar omdat hij - door Gods genade - steeds weer opnieuw in allerlei situaties met Maria zijn “fiat” heeft ge­spro­ken tot de Heer die hem heeft ge­roe­pen en tot zijn pries­ter heeft gemaakt. We brengen dank aan God voor het “ja, hier ben ik” van deze pries­ter, zijn “ ja, ik wil, ik ben bereid”, waar­mee hij Gods plan met zijn leven heeft aanvaard en dat met Gods hulp heeft verwer­ke­lijkt.

De vruchten van het pries­ter­schap

We danken God voor de tal­loze mensen die hij gees­te­lij­ke lei­ding heeft gegeven, waar­van hij de biecht heeft gehoord en die hij Gods ver­ge­ving heeft ge­schon­ken, die hij als man Gods vrien­de­lijk en begrip­vol te woord heeft gestaan, voor wie hij de heilige eucha­ris­tie heeft gevierd en aan wie hij het lichaam van Christus heeft uit­gereikt of de bruidsparen die hij op het ont­van­gen van het sacra­ment van het huwe­lijk heeft voor­be­reid en die hij in de echt heeft verbon­den. Wat is het pries­ter­schap een prach­tige roe­ping om Jezus, de goede her­der, te zijn voor de mensen!

In stilte

Dank­baar­heid is er vandaag in ons hart voor de na­tuur­lijke en bovenna­tuur­lijke gaven die de Heer aan Father Rafael de Ojeda heeft ge­schon­ken. Het goede gebeurt meestal in stilte, het komt niet in de media, het makt geen lawaai en het meeste en be­lang­rijk­ste pries­ter­lijk werk blijft dan ook verborgen voor de buiten­we­reld, maar allerlei personen zullen kunnen getuigen hoe een pries­ter, deze pries­ter werktuig was van Gods genade.

De mooiste roe­ping?

Wat is de mooiste roe­ping? Het eerste ant­woord op die vraag is mis­schien toch dat de mooiste roe­ping is de roe­ping die God voor je bestemd heeft. Als je merkt en ervaart dat het je roe­ping is om te trouwen, ga trouwen. Dat is voor jou het mooiste, het beste. Als je merkt dat God je voor het celi­ba­taire leven heeft bestemd, volg die weg. Als je merkt dat God je roept om pries­ter te wor­den of je leven te geven als God gewijde, volg die weg. Wees niet bang. Je moet nooit bang zijn, je bent in Gods hand. Zet stappen om te kunnen groeien in de navol­ging van Jezus Christus op die weg. In elke roe­ping kun je en moet je jezelf heiligen.

Offers

Na­tuur­lijk, elke roe­ping vraagt offers en het is dan ook nood­za­ke­lijk om ons­zelf te oefenen in het brengen van offers en in standvas­tig­heid. En we moeten onze levens­stijl aanpassen aan onze roe­ping. Beleef je een roe­ping tot het huwe­lijk? Laat je dan lei­den door de liefde voor je man of vrouw en breng de offers om niet voor jezelf te leven maar er voor elkaar te kunnen zijn. Ben je ge­roe­pen tot celi­ba­tair leven? Ga dan ook met anderen om op een wijze die daarbij past. Wees niet bang, maar wees ook con­se­quent: als het je roe­ping is om pries­ter te wor­den, stem je gedrag, je denken, je spreken, daarop af.

Vallen en opstaan

Het is niet dat je nooit fouten zult maken, geen zon­den zult begaan. We zijn geen engelen. Maar als je je roe­ping bewust bent, stem je leven daar dan op af en houd de goede rich­ting vast waarin je moet gaan om je roe­ping te verwezen­lijken. Daar ligt ons geluk! Ons geluk ligt in het omarmen en volgen van onze roe­ping. Als je gevallen bent, is er Gods barm­har­tig­heid en Zijn ver­ge­ving, maar sta op en ga ver­der in de rich­ting die bij je roe­ping hoort. Een dubbelleven of een zwalkend beleid holt alles uit, dan wordt je roe­ping een lege huls. Dit geldt voor ieder­een, wat je roe­ping ook moge zijn. Zondig je? Sta gauw op en ga ver­der, maar ga ver­der in de rich­ting die je roe­ping je wijst.

Proficiat!

We danken vandaag dus God dat we in al deze jaren in rector Rafael Ojeda een pries­ter hebben mogen ont­moe­ten die ons hierin is voor­ge­gaan. Van harte wens ik hem daarom proficiat met dit jubileum! En mis­schien dat deze dag voor som­mi­gen onder u een stimulans zal zijn om stappen te zetten op de weg van uw moge­lijke roe­ping.

Pries­terroe­ping

En als dat een roe­ping tot het pries­ter­schap is, wees er dan van overtuigd dat het een prach­tige weg is om als pries­ter Jezus Christus te­gen­woor­dig te mogen stellen.

Het voor­beeld van Maria

Broe­ders en zusters, we vieren dit pries­ter­jubi­leum op de dag dat we gedenken dat de heilige Maria met lichaam en ziel ten hemel is opgeno­men. Maria’s ten­hemel­op­ne­ming en kro­ning tot koningin van hemel en aarde, is de vol­tooi­ing haar roe­ping. De ten­hemel­op­ne­ming toont ons dat in Maria alles al voltooid is, wat wij eens hopen te krijgen en dat zij niet meer voor ons staat als het kleine, een­vou­dige meisje uit Nazareth, maar als degene die bij God er voor ons allen is, moe­der is van alle mensen,. In haar zien we wat er kan gebeuren als je God Zijn gang laat gaan in je leven. Hij en Hij alleen kan wer­ke­lijk grote dingen met ons doen.
Moge haar voor­spraak je ver­dere weg be­ge­lei­den, beste jubila­ris, beste Father Rafael de Ojeda, in dienst van Jezus Christus en Zijn Kerk.
