Stille Omgang... in Krakau

in verbondenheid met de Stille Omgang in Amsterdam

Sinds enkele jaren wordt in Krakau een Stille Omgang gehou­den in vereni­ging met de Stille Omgang van Am­ster­dam, die begint in de basiliek van de H. Drieëenheid in de bis­schops­stad van Karol Wojtyla, de latere paus Johannes Paulus II.

Gebed voor mgr. Smeets

Ook in Krakau heeft in de veer­tien­de eeuw een Eucha­ris­tisch won­der plaats gevon­den. In tegen­stel­ling tot Am­ster­dam wordt de omgang in Krakau ’s mid­dags gelopen en trekt een vijf­tig deel­ne­mers, na een H. Mis in de basiliek. Er is dit jaar ook uit­druk­ke­lijk gebe­den voor mgr. Smeets, de bischop van Roermond.

Eeen gedeelte daar­van in vertaling:

"Deel­ne­mers aan de Stille Stoet in Krakau zullen dit jaar ook bid­den voor bis­schop Harrie Smeets, Ordina­ris van het Bisdom Roermond in Neder­land, die termi­naal ziek is met een hersentumor. Bis­schop Smeets ontdekte zijn pries­terroe­ping na een ont­moe­ting met Johannes Paulus II in 1984 en heeft sindsdien een grote toe­wij­ding aan hem.

Krakau en Am­ster­dam zijn met elkaar verbon­den door het feit dat in beide ste­den in het mid­den van de veer­tien­de eeuw beroemde eucha­ris­ti­sche won­de­ren plaatsvon­den. Am­ster­dam werd een be­lang­rijk bede­vaarts­oord van West-Europa en bleef dat tot het einde van de zes­tien­de eeuw. Toen pro­tes­tan­ten in Neder­land aan de macht kwamen, verniel­den ze het Am­ster­damse eucha­ris­ti­sche hei­lig­dom en verbo­den ze de katho­lie­ke ere­dienst. Katho­lie­ken overleef­den echter door te bid­den in geheime kapellen, en aan het einde van de negen­tien­de eeuw vernieuw­den ze ook - uit nood­zaak in een verborgen, geheime vorm - de traditie van pro­ces­sies ter ere van het Am­ster­damse won­der. Vandaag de dag verzamelt het enkele duizen­den mensen uit binnen- en bui­ten­land, niet alleen katho­lie­ken. Het wordt altijd gehou­den op de zater­dag na 15 maart, de datum van het won­der".

Haar­lem-Am­ster­dam, the 3d of March 2023

Dear brothers and sisters,

For the third time the Silent Procession is organized in Cracow. I was very pleased to hear about it and to know that in this way you are spiritually united with the Silent Procession in Am­ster­dam, where we annually in this way commemorate the Eucha­ristic miracle that took place in the Capital of the Netherlands in 1345.

Especially in these days of violence and war at the bor­ders of Europe, where the Ukranian people is suffe­ring, it is important that we feel united as brothers and sisters in faith and help each other. And indeed: so many Ukrainian people have been received in Poland, which is a beautiful sign of Polish generosity.

We live in an era of secularization and this Silent Procession is therefore an important and eloquent remin­der of the presence of the Lord in our times, in our society. His voice can be heard in the silence of our hearts. It is God’s peace and our inner peace that should flow into this world and create a new begin­ning; we pray that the desire for peace may fill the hearts of peoples and especially the hearts of their lea­ders.

The new Dutch saint Titus Brandsma was put in prison by the Nazi-regime before being abducted to the Concentration camp where he died. There in the silence of his prison cell he experienced the presence of the Lord. He enjoyed this presence so much that he consi­dered his stay in prison as a gift from Heaven. This again makes clear to us how important and fulfilling a well received silence is. I hope you will have an experience of this kind while wal­king in silence in this Silent Procession...

This year we celebrate the 700th anniversary of the canonization of saint Thomas Aquinas. I congratulate the Dominican Friars and the Foundation Dominican Centre for Liturgy who organised this Silent Procession. Saint Thomas wrote the Office of Corpus Christi day and several Eucha­rist hymns and it is therefore very fit­ting that he has a special place in our hearts and minds today. May his humble desire to serve the Lord, who is hid­den among us in the most holy Eucha­rist, continue to inspire us all.
