Maria, voorbeeld en voorspraak

H. Mis op de Sacro Monte in Varese

De basiliek op de Sacro Monte di Varese is aan het laatste glorie­volle geheim gewijd: de kro­ning van Maria in de hemel. Vandaar dat het er feest is op de gedenk­dag van Maria koningin. De dag ervoor bezochten we het huis van de zalige Pier Giorgio Frassati.

Pier Giorgio

Pier Giorgio Frassati is een van de heilige/zalige patronen van de Wereld­jon­ge­ren­da­gen en ik heb tij­dens de catechese van die dagen aan­dacht besteed aan zijn bij­zon­dere leven, dat maar kort duurde: van 1901 tot 1925. In die jaren is hij op tal van gebie­den actief geweest, onder meer in zijn inzet voor de armen en voor de vrede, een heel actief leven met een levende aanwe­zig­heid van Jezus Christus in alles wat hij deed. In zes dagen werd hij door ziekte weg­gerukt (poliomielite fulminante, waar­schijn­lijk opgelopen bij het ver­zorgen van zieken) om deel te krijgen aan een beter leven. Pier Giorgio was van een vermogende diplomaten­fa­mi­lie die niet zo gelovig en niet prak­ti­se­rend was.

Pollone

De familie bezat een vakantiehuis in Pollone waar een groot deel van de zomer­pe­rio­de werd door­ge­bracht. Omdat het huis in Turijn een huurhuis was, dat in andere han­den is ge­ble­ven, is het interieur van de sterf­ka­mer van Pier Giorgio over­ge­bracht naar Pollone. Daar is ook de kamer die hij in Pollone had en er wor­den nog her­in­ne­ringen bewaard, zoals zijn skiërs en de instru­menten die hij bij het bergbeklimmen gebruikte. Pier Giorgio sliep met een touw om zijn voet dat door het raam naar buiten hing. De tuinman trok eraan om een uur of vier ’s morgens zodat Pier Giorgio zon­der iemand in huis te storen naar Oropa kon gaan, daar de Mis kon bijwonen en weer thuis was voor het ontbijt. Ook paus Johannes Paulus II heeft Pollone bezocht.
Paus Fran­cis­cus stelde Pier Giorgio Frassati ten voor­beeld aan de Neder­landse jon­ge­ren in zijn bood­schap voor de jon­ge­ren­ont­moe­ting in Mariënkroon in 2014. Die bood­schap is heelmaal onder aan dit bericht nog eens te lezen.

Gesprek

We had­den hier een mooi gesprek met de nicht van Pier Giorgio, Wanda Gawronski, die op haar hoge leef­tijd, zeer actief is en veel weet te ver­tellen over haar neef. In het fraaie buitenhuis bevin­den zich ook schil­derijen van de moe­der van Pier Giorgio die een bekende kunstenares was. We zijn er bui­ten­ge­woon harte­lijk ont­van­gen. Samen hebben we gebe­den in zijn ‘sterf­ka­mer’.

Sacro Monte

Op het feest van Maria Koningin hebben we de Eucha­ris­tie gevierd in de basiliek van de Sacro Monte. De basiliek is gewijd aan de kro­ning van Maria tot koningin. Een week tevoren was kar­di­naal Eijk er voor het feest van Maria Ten­hemel­op­ne­ming, ik was er om het octaaf af te sluiten. De homilie is hier­on­der na te lezen.

Voor de Mis kregen de pries­ters nog een rond­lei­ding door de crypte die enkele jaren gele­den is uitgegraven. Daar wer­den ver­schil­lende 13e eeuwse fresco's ontdekt waar­on­der de bij­gaande afbeel­ding van Veronica.

Maria, discepola del Figlio, intercede per noi

Fratelli e sorelle,

Cosa puoi fare quando ti trovi in difficoltà? Cosa puoi fare quando senti tristezza en quando non sai come andare avanti? Ma anche: Da chi vorresti andare per condivi­dere la tua gioia e la tua gratitudine?

Ex voto

La Vergine Maria ha un significato speciale per ognuno di noi. Natural­mente, ciò che la nostra madre Maria ha significato e significa ancora oggi per voi, dipende anche dalle vostre esperienze personali. In alcuni santuari ci sono semplici disegni o dipinti di inci­denti, di un letto di malattia, di una terribile tempesta o di qualsiasi altro evento in cui persone di fede hanno speri­mentato la protezione di Maria. Si chiamano “ex voto”, queste testimonianze. Spesso sono espressioni di una promessa alla Madonna. È bello questo e richiede rispetto, perché è l’espressione della fede e delle esperienze vissute con fede. Ma anche nei nostri cuori, dentro di noi, ci sono questi “ex voto”, ci sono le cose che mai dobbiamo dimenticare - una chiamata forse che abbiamo sentito, un’ esperienza bella o qualche altra cosa - perché ali­mentano la gratitudine e la vera gioia.

Perché a Maria?

Veniamo in santuari come questo Sacro Monte per chie­dere a Maria la sua intercessione, per ringraziare dei doni ricevuti, per avere più luce sul nostro cammino di vita.

Ma allora cosa potete trovare da Maria, in momenti di preoccupazioni e momenti di gioie?

Intercessione

Innanzitutto, Maria intercede per noi. È un'intercessione per noi presso il Figlio. Pensiamo a questa intercessione quando chiamiamo Maria “Regina”. Questo titolo di Maria ci ricorda la Regina Madre dell'Antico Testa­mento, che poteva andare libera­mente da suo Figlio, il re, per chie­dergli qualsiasi cosa per i sudditi che si rivolge­vano a lei. Così è la regina madre Maria per noi; e suo Figlio, il Re Gesù Cristo, non la rifiuterà mai.

L' imitazione di Maria

La festa di oggi è anche la conclusione e il culmine della festa dell'Assunzione di Maria, assunta nel cielo con anima e corpo. Questa festa ci ricorda che, a imitazione di Maria, siamo tutti destinati alla vita eterna e alla risurrezione del corpo. Vale a dire: Maria è il nostro esempio! Lei ci ha fatto strada! Se in qualsiasi situazione della nostra vita vogliamo sapere cosa dobbiamo fare, chiedetevi cosa avrebbe fatto Maria, perché lei ha sempre compiuto la volontà di Dio e ha seguito sempre con tutto il cuore Gesù. Maria era calore, gioia, disponibilità, fede e fiducia, anche nelle situazioni difficili, nel dolore e nella tristezza, anche sotto la croce del suo Figlio, sapeva scoprire la mano di Dio.

Collaborare alla redenzione

Non dimentichiamo che la vita di Maria è stata al servizio di Gesù. La sua vita ha collaborato alla redenzione che Gesù ha portato a noi. Questo è anche il nostro compito nella vita: cercare di diffon­dere l'amore che Gesù ci ha portato, aiutarlo a liberare le persone dal potere del male, aiutarlo a scoprire la gioia del Vangelo. In questo senso siamo chiamati a diventare missionari con Maria.

Vera madre

Grazie, Madre Maria, Regina del Cielo, per esserci stata vicina, per aver voluto essere la nostra protettrice e il nostro conforto nelle difficoltà. Grazie, perché tu ci sei per noi, sei una vera madre di tutti noi.

Si, tutto questo è certa­mente molto importante: in Maria, Dio ci ha dato un segno chiaro che non ci lascerà soli, Maria è una protettrice che ci prende per mano con cui possiamo attraversare la vita, in cammino verso l’Eternità! Coraggio!

MESSAGE OF POPE FRANCIS TO DUTCH YOUNG PEOPLE ON THE OCCASION OF THE NATIONAL CATHOLIC YOUTH FESTIVALCELEBRATED IN THE ABBEY OF MARIËNKROON IN NIEUWKUIJK

Dear young friends,

I send affectionate gree­tings to you on the occasion of the National Catholic Youth Festival which has brought so many of you together at the Abbey of Mariënkroon in Nieuwkuijk. I wish also to greet and to thank your Pastors, who have planned this mee­ting centred on the theme: “New, pure and intense”.

As you know, every year I write a Message to the young people of the whole world for the World Youth Day. Star­ting from this year until WYD 2016, which will be celebrated in Krakow, I have proposed an itinerary of spiritual preparation based on the Beatitudes. In this won­derful text from Matthew’s Gospel (Mt5:3-12), you can find a concrete program of life that can serve as a guide for us on the path to true happiness.

The three beatitudes that I propose for your reflection are:

2014: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Mt 5:3);

2015: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God” (Mt 5:8);

2016: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy” (Mt 5:7).

As you can see, the Beatitudes of Jesus are new. In fact, they are revolutionary. They present a model of happiness contrary to the logic of this world. Those whom Jesus proclaimed blessed are regarded as useless, or “losers”. What the world glorifies is success at any cost, affluence, the arrogance of power and self-affirmation at the expense of others. Jesus offers a different definition of what it means to be “blessed”; he shows us the way to life and happiness, the way that he himself has taken. In fact, Jesus himself is the way! Throughout his entire life he showed us how to live each one of the Beatitudes. Jesus loves each one of you, each one of us, with an infinite love! By his death on the cross and his resurrection, he proved his boundless mercy, gave us salvation and opened the way for us to a new life.

If we accept his love and salvation, if we contemplate Jesus in his own poverty, his purity of heart, and his mercy, we will realize how beautiful our Christian vocation is, and we will not hesitate to ask the Lord for the grace to imitate him. I invite you to do just that. “Do not be afraid of Christ! He takes nothing away, and he gives you everything” (Benedict XVI).

Dear brothers and sisters, Saint John, wri­ting to young people, told them: “You are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one” (1 Jn 2:14). Young people want to live intense experiences! I challenge you: Say no to an ephemeral, superficial and throwaway culture, a culture that assumes that you are not strong, that you are not capable of facing great challenges in your life! Think big! As Blessed Piergiorgio Frassati once said: “To live without faith, to have no heritage to uphold, to fail to struggle constantly to defend the truth: this is not living. It is scra­ping by. We should never just scrape by, but really live”.

May the Virgin Mary, whom all generations call “blessed” (cf. Lk 1:48), intercede for you, so that you can experience that joy which is new, pure and intense, the joy which you can find only in Jesus. To each of you, your families, and to all the young people of the Netherlands, I gladly impart my bles­sing as a pledge of joy and peace.
